Bernadette manages the Planning and Property Services team and offers specialist advice on all aspects of planning, environmental and licensing law. Her team is recognised for its expertise in planning and environmental law in the Legal 500 directory.

As well as being commercially aware, she is friendly and approachable to her clients providing sensible, clear and effective advice.

Skills & Expertise

Bernadette’s client base includes private and commercial property owners, developers, schools, hotels, charities, residents groups, clubs and industrial sites.

Her work includes exploring development potential, negotiations and appeals against planning refusals and enforcement notices, the drafting and negotiating of planning and related agreements and advising on the environmental implications of development proposals. 

She has recently been involved in the opening of a new boutique hotel in Marble Arch and a nightclub in St Albans and she has acted for a variety of businesses including a self storage company, a religious charity centre and a car breakers yard dealing with complex planning issues.

Bernadette is a Legal Member on the Royal Town Planning Institute’s General Assembly and sits on the RTPI’s Care and Conduct panel.

She lectures regularly on planning law topics to other property professionals and developers and was part of the seminar team at the East of England RTPI’s planning conferences in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Background & Qualifications

Bernadette trained with Boodle Hatfield, Mayfair and qualified as a solicitor in 1990.  Since then she has specialised in planning, licensing and property related disputes, working in private practice and as in house legal Counsel for a property development company.

She has worked in St Albans since 1999 and was formerly a partner with Pickworths before joining Debenhams Ottaway as a partner in 2008.
